I know what you mean. Shelters can be insanely weird with their rules and stuff. I have always hated the "first in line" nonsense. What does that have to do with the compatibility or quality of the home? It just proves they are punctual. ha ha

They seem to be getting worse and it is way worse in higher populated areas. We got all three of ours from shelters. Tia was 7 months old and we were her third family. She was a hooooooorrible dog. I mean it. HORRIBLE. And that's why we could never take her back. We knew a dog returned one more time before 12 months old would be a death sentence. So we were lucky to be in a time of our life that we were able to spend the HOURS and HOURS it took to "fix" her. She's still got her share of issues, but she is healthy, controlled and safe. Smile The shelter there was just happy to get rid of a "trouble" dog. ha

Panzer was easy. We actually took Tia with us. The dog we loved she HATED so we decided that was a no. Then the lady realized we weren't afraid of pit bulls and asked if we saw the little pit mix and we said no. And she brought Panzer in. Tia and Panzer started playing like they had been buddies forever. That sealed that. And I'm sorry, I really don't think Panzer has any pit in him. He was a stray and they labeled him has pit because he is brown brindle. I would bet my life that he has whippet in him (which is a breed that can be any color). After we signed the papers the lady started balling and said she was so happy....the day we adopted him was his last day before euthanasia since he had been in the shelter so long and they needed space. Sad All because he was labeled as a pit mix and that scared people. Sad He is the SWEETEST dog ever. Such a doll.

Rommel was even easier. I was working at a vet clinic that had a stray facility. I was had done a little fostering for the stray facility before. Brent knew that I had a soft spot for Min Pins and Rommel came in and Brent called and asked me if I would foster him for the long weekend....and then Rommel just never went back to the shelter. ha ha Brent also told me he was counting on that. Smile

The next time we would like to get a puppy from a breeder. We have done the "fixing" thing and would like to start fresh with a puppy that didn't have neglect/socialism/abuse/abandonment issues!!

And how was that for a rambling novel????

I'm glad you got Rocky. Very Happy It's no accident that you got that sweet boxer pup!!

Teri,
That is so so wonderful!!!!
I would love to eventually adopt a pup.
When I got Rocky it was back when I was with David and since that broke up it's just me and my babe Sad
I didn't realize how hard it would be but here he is, slowly nudging me off the couch in his sleep and I can't help but smile.

Hope I find a DH like yours Smile
I wanna have a BUNCH more dogs running around!
And I want Rocky to have a buddy to push off the couch.... not me Smile

If you're ever in Brooklyn with the pups, bring em by for a playdate Smile

Very Happy My DH is a true dog lover, it's nice. Though sometimes I think it would be better to marry someone who had a little more control in that area so we wouldn't have THREE of them! ha! We love them all though!!

After having more than one I don't think I could ever go back to just one again. I do think next time we will stick with just two though. Three and a toddler is a bit much, especially since DH is military and we have to move all the time. But two IMHO is so much easier than one! They really do very well with a companion of their own species.

Though if I were single I don't know if I would want more than one! Obviously its easier to walk one, travel with one, board one, etc etc. Smile

If I ever happen to be insane enough to travel from Nebraska to Brooklyn with all three dogs we will be sure to pop by. Wink Laughing

I knew I liked you Maya! LOL I had dobermans growing up. Finally talked the DH into getting one, which we got for "free" from the newspaper. She had her issues, but typical of a dobie became a great dog! She got to see the little one for about a year before we had to put her down.

We still have our rottie mix, but since we are in a fifth wheel with 2 cats, 1 dog and the kiddo - we are a 1 dog owner family until we get up to our 20 + acres. LOL Then I wouldn't mind maybe another doberman. Smile

Aw, I love Dobes! I have only met a couple, but they were wonderful. Smile There was one when I worked at the vet clinic named Samantha and she came in every couple weeks for a nail trim. We all thought of her as our own. Wink Such a sweetie!! She was a Red Cross certified therapy dog too for the military hospital there in Germany where we were stationed. Anyway, she was one of the ones I've known, but was a wonderful girl!! I'm a Rott fan as well. Super great dogs. (Honestly though, most of them are unless they aren't raised properly or the rare ones with mental issues due to negligent breeding practices.)

I heard that they take the runts and breed them with each other.
They're basically a breed of pups with stunted growth which is why they don't live as long.

Maybe I'm getting wrong info though.

I know you quoted me but don't lol.
I'm not 100% on it although it does make sense.
They say when you buy one there's a chance it won't necessarily stay small...

If you go for one that is bred by someone involved in the AKC showing of their Yorkies then you get a well bred Yorkie. But because for some reason everyone wants itty bitty "pretend" dogs, yes...often times there is no second thought to breeding together two of the tiniest of the breed in the hopes they will get smaller and smaller...with complete disregard to the health problems this may cause for the offspring.

The thing that most winds me up are the "designer breeds" that are nothing more than mutts. The labradoodles or goldendoodles or chi-poos or yorkie-poos and all of that nonsense. A breed is when you can take two of the same breed and bred them to each other and end up with a consistent litter of the same breed. A mutt is anything that doesn't fit that. Wink And the fact that people are willing to pay hundreds to THOUSANDS of dollars for a mutt that has no health or genetic guarantee and no real guarantee of basic temperament is beyond me. lol

Will you kill me if I think they're cute nonetheless?
It's tampering with nature but I guess society has been doing it for so long it's become a trend Sad
Sad but true.

I do appreciate the cool fruits and veggies they "breed" together lol
YUM!
hee hee

Now I just need an animal loving hubby and I'll adopt a pup.
I would LOVE to get Rocky a pal.
Soon hopefully Smile

I've been seeing the yorkie's EVERYWHERE!
They're the most popular accessory now lol
I WISH I could carry Rocky with me everywhere I go grrrrrrrrrr

Touching base- Started weening Rocky off the crate!
He's doing AMAZING knock on wood

He has the kitchen to himself when I'm at work.... no chewing on cabinets yet
Has the run of the house at night.... worse thing happened is he tore bed number 1,002
So now he's stuck with the space carpet under the coffee table which I don't think will last long lol

And no accidents in a while! KNOCK ON A LOT OF WOOD Smile

BUT my training has officially stopped as far as tricks. He doesn't like treats! And he thinks he's human- I researched it.... how funny is that!?!?
Just the other day I had a BBQ. A hot dog fell and I let him have it.
He held on to that thing for an HOUR and didn't even puncture it until we all started eating! How crazy is that!??!!?

So so happy to have such a special dog lol
So much for roll over and beg though Sad
Any suggestions for click training a dog that couldn't care less for treats?

What is his motivation? Is he praise oriented? Does he have a super special toy?

He sounds like such a fun fella! Very Happy

Congrats on the success with kennel weaning. How old is he? Often around 2 years old they go through a regression phase and so I wouldn't totally do away with the kennel. Smile In fact if I still had room I'd have all three of my dogs' kennels out for them to go into as they pleased. Sometimes I still come home to find things chewed that shouldn't be chewed. Mad Very rarely though.

He loves to play with his toys but none enough to be used as bait.
The only thing he loves enough is attention.... other people's attention lol
But I really don't want to have to ask friends over just to train him Smile
Besides he gets super distracted.
grrrr

Well so far on his chew list would be my shoes, hair clips and sunglasses.
I'm so happy I don't spend much on them.
IF he goes for my bags I may cry lol

I do leave temptations around when I'm there to catch him but he's a smart one.
He KNOWS not to even think of wrecking things when I'm around lol

Chicken might work. He LOVES chicken but I'll only give him a bite once in a while.
I don't know how much I Wanna use it to train him.
I don't want him to get sick from it.
grrrrrr a dog that doesn't like treats.....

Have a wonderful day! And check out my super cute handbags at the address below!!

I wish I had the excuse to travel lol

I probably could have gone on 4 vacations with the money I spent on Rocky.
He is costing me a fortune!!!!

The little rascal's now sneaking things off the tables to chew.
Sunglasses, hair clips, lighters GONE!

Forget new bags.... must afford more of the cheaper accessories for him to destroy Smile
